I recently came across Deputy Dobbertin's case while researching unsolved mysteries, and though his murderer was caught, the circumstances surrounding his death are incredibly poignant. What's been sticking with me is his initiative to start the Douglas County Sheriff Boat Patrol. It's evident how committed he was to serving his community in any way possible, not just on the streets but also on the water. I imagine that ability to see beyond the immediate needs and recognize where help might be needed speaks volumes about his character. Having someone like him taken away so suddenly must have left a void in both his department and the community at large. To anyone in Omaha who remembers those days or benefitted from his patrols, your memories must be filled with pride despite the tragedy. Just knowing his legacy lives on through scholarships is a testament to the lasting impact he made. If anyone has personal stories about his boating patrols or how he touched lives in other ways, I'd love to hear them.
