I’ve been reading about the events surrounding Justice Charles L. Flake's tragic death, and one aspect that's really struck me is the incredible bravery shown by the Flake brothers. Despite knowing the risks posed by "Will Mason," Charles and James pressed forward with their duty. Can you imagine the courage it must have taken to confront such a dangerous individual?
It’s so sobering to think about the reality for officers like Charles back then, facing significant risks without the protective gear or backup we take for granted today. The impact on his family is unimaginable—losing a husband and father, especially with another child on the way. It’s deeply moving to see how the community came together to honor his sacrifice. Has anyone come across more information about how his family coped in the aftermath or how the community supported them?
Does anyone have more information on Mrs. Hall's boarding house where the shooting took place? I've been trying to piece together what kind of place it was back then and why Mason chose to stay there. Was it a well-known spot in Snowflake, or just somewhere out of the way? It's haunting to think that such a violent confrontation happened in what was probably a homey setting. My heart goes out to the Flake family and the Snowflake community who must have been shaken by such a sudden and senseless loss. Any details on this location or its history would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Has anyone else come across the letter Charles Flake's wife wrote after his passing? It's so moving and revealing. It's hard not to feel the enormous weight of the loss she and her children must have experienced. I can't imagine how devastating it must have been for his family to lose him so suddenly, especially when Mrs. Flake was pregnant with their fifth child. It's a poignant reminder of the very real dangers faced by those in law enforcement back then—and still today. The community of Snowflake must have rallied around them during such a dark time. If anyone has insights on how the family fared after, I'd love to hear it. Let's honor Charles's bravery by keeping his memory alive.
