I've been thinking a lot about the way young, promising lives like Laura and Bryan Bernstein's can be upended so suddenly by random acts of violence. It's tragic how this young couple, who had their whole future ahead of them after just graduating from Cornell, stopped for what should have been a brief, uneventful rest and it ended so horrifically. I can't imagine the pain their families must have felt, knowing they were on the brink of starting a new journey only to have it taken away. What's really unsettling to me is the role reversal of Dickens, someone who once worked with troubled youth, becoming a part of something so sinister. It almost makes you wonder what led him down such a dark path, but more importantly, it highlights just how unfair and senseless the loss of Laura and Bryan was. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved them.
