I can't stop thinking about the impact this tragedy must be having on Diego's peers and the broader school community. It breaks my heart to imagine kids going back to school, knowing what happened to their classmate and his family. I really hope the additional counseling services being offered by Belen Consolidated Schools are helping them cope.
When violent incidents like this happen, it's easy to overlook how the environment at school can change a student's life forever. You have kids who have classes with Diego and Adrian, friends who were close to Alexander, all dealing with a lot of mixed emotions. The shock waves from this kind of event ripple out for a long time.
It's great to see Superintendent Lawrence Sanchez focusing on mental health awareness right now. We often talk about the importance of addressing mental health issues among youth, but real action seems to lag. This situation could, hopefully, serve as a wake-up call for us to ensure that there are enough resources for young people who might be struggling. Whatever led to this tragedy, we need to work together to help prevent anything like it from happening again.
Has anyone else been looking into the background of Diego Leyva? This case has been weighing heavily on my mind, and I'm trying to piece together who he was before all this happened. I heard he was a student at Belen High School, and people who knew him say he was quiet but well-liked. There was no indication from most accounts that he would do something like this, which makes it so puzzling—and just so incredibly sad for everyone involved.
Does anyone know if he had been in trouble before or if there were signs that he might have been struggling? I feel for the friends and classmates who must be trying to understand how someone they shared lives with could be gone in such a violent way, and how someone else they knew could be responsible. Mental health concerns in teens are serious, and it's a reminder that sometimes the signs aren't as clear as we'd hope. My thoughts are with everyone in Belen dealing with this tragedy.
