I’ve been following Ely Mendez Gomez’s case closely and recently came across something that keeps me up at night. My thoughts are with his family; they’ve lost someone truly special. It’s beyond me how two young people, Marcus Williams and Gabrielle Cortes, could have planned something so horrendous. The fact that someone Ely thought he could trust, a friend even, was involved just makes it all the more chilling. Does anyone else feel like this is an example of how quickly things can escalate among teenagers when weapons are involved? How can communities work together to prevent this kind of tragedy? It's so important to focus on the root causes that might push young people towards violence in the first place. Every time I think about Ely and what his potential could have been, it hits hard. Sending love and strength to everyone who knew and loved him.
