I recently came across the tragic story of Maurice R. Purnell and wanted to talk about something that really stuck with me: the resilience of his mother, Bertha Purnell. After losing her son to senseless violence, she has been doing everything in her power to turn her grief into action. Her courage to stand up and advocate for change is seriously admirable. She created a nonprofit and joined Moms Demand Action, which shows her dedication to making a real difference. It's maddening to think about how many families in Chicago face similar tragedies without any justice. Bertha’s work is a reminder that, despite the darkness, there is hope through activism and community support. My heart goes out to Maurice’s family. They—and families like them—deserve so much more than just thoughts and prayers.
