I recently came across the story of John F. Hunter, another tragic victim of senseless violence on Chicago's South Side in 2017. What's so deeply distressing is not just that he became another statistic in a year that saw over 700 homicides, but the persistent backdrop of issues like poverty and limited social services that keep fueling this violence. Considering his loss, I've been thinking a lot about the many community-based programs that try to tackle these root causes. Those efforts, like youth mentorship and economic empowerment initiatives, are absolutely crucial. It's clear they need more support and funding to make a real difference, especially in neighborhoods hardest hit by violence. It feels like they’re on the frontline, right alongside law enforcement, working tirelessly to prevent more families from experiencing such devastating loss. For John and others who were lost in similar circumstances, I hope we don’t lose sight of the importance of these comprehensive approaches. While there's no quick fix, supporting these programs might help to prevent future tragedies. Hunter's family, like so many others, deserves both justice and the hope that no one else has to suffer as they have.
