Has anyone else been thinking a lot about Shelby's military background and how it might have influenced his life after service? It breaks my heart to hear about his dedication as an infantryman in Afghanistan, and how he earned accolades like the Combat Infantry Badge. Transitions for veterans can be so challenging, even when they’re full of potential and carving out new paths, like Shelby was with his college studies and landscaping work.
I just wonder if there’s more to explore about how support systems for veterans—like the one he was supposed to find through an anger management class—are either helping or failing those who’ve served. It sounds like Shelby was really trying to build a stable, fulfilling life after serving his country. Just thinking about it makes me feel for his family, especially his dad, who shared that love of catfishing with him. It’s sad to think about how moments like those have been taken away.
