It's so distressing to hear about this tragedy involving Walter Mancia Menjivar. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this incredibly tough time. I'm particularly struck by the role that surveillance footage played in quickly apprehending the suspect, Maricela Urias-Martinez. While it's a relief for the community that there's been an arrest, I can't help but think about how impactful this technology has become in solving crimes. But it's also a reminder that behind all this technology are lives being affected. I'm hoping that this case will push for more discussion on how we can work together to tackle gun violence in Oakland. For Walter’s family and all those who knew him, I truly hope justice is served and that his memory is honored by making our communities safer.
