Hey everyone, I’ve been following Antonio Javier Lopez’s case and truly feel for his family. It’s so difficult to comprehend that such a promising young life could be taken so senselessly by the rampant gun violence in Chicago. I was struck by the fact that Antonio was just out on a summer evening when he was killed. It really hits home how random and unfair this all is. Something that’s been on my mind is the community response—or lack thereof—when these tragedies happen. I understand there are efforts to bring people together and push for change, but it feels like every time one of these young kids dies, it just doesn’t get the attention it deserves. I read somewhere that community-based initiatives in Gage Park were being tried back in 2017, but what more can be done to make sure they actually help? How do we ensure the safety of kids like Antonio? I can’t imagine what his family is going through, but they have my deepest sympathy. I hope we can find ways to come together and prevent more families from suffering like this.
