Has anyone else looked into the weather conditions on June 15, 1997, near Friday Harbor? I've been trying to piece together what might have happened with James McElhenie and Dan Bentzen. I found some old reports indicating there was unusual weather that day, with sudden fog rolling in over the San Juan Islands. It makes me wonder if visibility was a major issue that contributed to their disappearance. It's scary how fast conditions can change out there. Also, does anyone know if either of them had any experience navigating in fog? Just trying to understand how such an experienced boater like Dan could have vanished without a trace.
Has anyone else looked into weather conditions on June 15, 1997, near Friday Harbor? I was trying to understand what might have contributed to James McElhenie and Dan Bentzen's disappearance. I know the waters around the San Juan Islands can be unpredictable, but was there a storm or unusual currents reported that day? It just seems odd that experienced boaters and their vessel vanished without a trace. Maybe the weather played a bigger role than we think? I'd love to hear thoughts or if anyone has found reports from that time!
Just came across the case of James Patrick McElhenie and Dan Bentzen going missing back in '97 while boating near Friday Harbor. What strikes me is how extensive the search efforts were, yet they didn’t turn up a single piece of evidence. It sounds like there were coast guard crews, local authorities, and even volunteers combing the area. How does an entire boat vanish like that without a trace? It makes you wonder whether something more than just a tragic accident happened out there. Given how many people are involved in the boating community around those islands, it's surprising no one reported seeing anything unusual that day. Curious if anyone here knows of any similar cases in the area or has more info on the weather conditions around the time they disappeared?
