I'm really struck by the role community can play in shaping a young person's life, especially after reading about all the positive things people have said about Keydren "Ka$h" Pettiford. It sounds like he was really involved with helping his grandmother and had a lot of potential ahead of him. It's hard to grasp how senseless acts of violence can rip that future away. Given that the investigation led to the arrest of Naviair Joiner, it makes me reflect on how complex youth violence is. Charging another young person in this tragedy shows how deep the problem is— it’s not just isolated incidents but a symptom of larger systemic issues. While I’m relieved there’s been some progress in the case, my thoughts are with all families involved. I'm hopeful that the focus on addressing youth violence will lead to meaningful changes. Education, mental health support, and opportunities for young people are so critical in preventing these tragedies. Community engagement is key. We need to create spaces where our youth feel safe and valued, not just in Durham, but everywhere.
