I've been following this case closely, and one thing that I find incredibly difficult to understand is how Darren Clayton was released just days before this terrible tragedy. His prior arrests, especially related to violence, should have raised red flags. Why wasn't there more done to ensure he was not a threat to anyone, especially someone as vibrant and full of potential as Makayla? My heart goes out to her family and friends, particularly those young children who looked up to her at Vance Elementary and the Edington Center. We all need to come together and push for changes in how the system handles violent offenders. Makayla's story is a painful reminder of the urgent need to reform these processes.
