In the early morning hours of May 3, 2023, 37-year-old Jason Palmer was fatally shot just before 1 a.m. on the 3100 block of Thomas Street in the Jeff-Vander-Lou neighborhood of St. Louis. Palmer, who lived on the 2100 block of Palm Avenue, was pronounced dead at the scene outside The Gardens at Renaissance Place apartments after an argument escalated into violence.

Surveillance cameras captured the entire altercation. Video shows another man shooting Palmer in the neck and then firing two additional shots after Palmer had fallen to the ground. Authorities identified 41-year-old J B Loggins III of St. Louis as the shooter; he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and drug trafficking. Loggins later pleaded guilty to reduced charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action and received a 22-year prison sentence: 19 years for second-degree murder plus a consecutive three-year term for armed criminal action.
