I'm still processing the tragic events at the 7-Eleven that led to Walter Eugene Painter's death. Something that's been sticking with me is how quickly life can change in the blink of an eye. It's evident that both sides were affected that night—not only the families involved but every witness and responder at the scene. I keep thinking about how many store clerks out there face danger with little to no warning. They’re there to make an honest living, yet they sometimes find themselves in the middle of an unimaginable situation. I can't help but feel for the families who lost someone that day, and also for those living with the fear and trauma of what they witnessed. It's unfortunate how common these violent acts seem to be in settings where people are just going about their daily lives. Hats off to the Norfolk Police and everyone involved in quickly identifying and arresting White-Kennedy. It gives a little comfort knowing that justice is being pursued, even though it won't bring Walter back. I really hope this brings some form of closure and healing to Walters's loved ones and serves as a wake-up call for how crucial it is to address the roots of violence in our communities.
