I've been thinking a lot about the impact this event must have had on Benita Mozelle's daughters, Bri’Asia and Nigera. Losing a mother at such a young age to violence is unimaginable. It’s clear from what people who knew Benita shared that she was a beacon of love and strength for her family. Her dedication to her daughters and her ability to find joy even in challenging times were emphasized by everyone who knew her.
The fact that the community held vigils in her honor speaks volumes about the kind of person she was. It’s heartening to see how tightly the community has rallied around the families affected, but it's also a poignant reminder of the work still needed to tackle the roots of such violence. I hope more initiatives are started to support young people and offer them guidance, potentially preventing future tragedies.
To anyone who might have first or even secondhand information that could prevent another family from experiencing this kind of tragedy, please consider speaking up. We often underestimate how much of a difference coming together as a community can make.
Sending my deepest sympathies to the friends and family of both Benita and Troy.
