Hey everyone, I can't stop thinking about the increased homicide rate in Newport News this past year. Demario Jevon Mapp's tragic death is yet another reminder of how urgent it is for our community and officials to address this worrying trend. What really struck me is the timing—happening just a day after Christmas. It's devastating to think of his family and loved ones dealing with such loss during what should be a joyous time. Has anyone else noticed changes in their neighborhood security? I think it’s time we come together as a community to push for better safety measures. Whether it's through neighborhood watch groups or advocating for more resources from the city, we need to do something to stop this pattern. Demario deserved better, and so does every other victim. Anyone have ideas or know of initiatives already underway? Stay safe out there, everyone.
