I came across the tragedy at the Southern Avenue Metro Station, and as a regular commuter, it's deeply unsettling. I often use that station and knowing something like this happened there makes you question the safety measures in place. Bacari Colvin was only 19, with his whole life ahead of him, and his family is now left grappling with an unimaginable loss. While the suspect has been caught, it brings to light how youthful violence is becoming so alarmingly frequent. It raises the question: What more can be done to ensure the safety of young people in our communities? How do we prevent tragedies like this from happening again? My heart goes out to Bacari's family and friends; losing someone that young is a pain no one should endure. Also, sending strength to everyone who witnessed the event firsthand; I can only imagine how distressing that must have been. This incident definitely calls for a closer examination of the current security policies at Metro stations and a community-wide effort to address and curb violence. It’s critical for these areas, which many of us traverse daily, to feel safe and secure.
