I recently came across the tragic case of Zerrick Lebeau Jr., and one aspect I can't stop thinking about is the location where it happened. The 1800 block of Rousseau Street, right outside an Anytime Fitness, is usually such a bustling area, especially in the evening. How could something so tragic happen in a place where people are just trying to go about their daily lives, possibly heading to the gym or home after work? It strikes me how vulnerable we can be, even in places we assume are relatively safe. I feel deeply for Zerrick's family and friends, knowing they have to associate such heartbreak with a spot passed by so many. The thought of its proximity to familiar community locations—the gym, Eleanor McMain, and nearby parts of Tchoupitoulas—must make it even harder to process. It's unsettling that in a city already grappling with violence, this senseless loss adds to their grief without any closure. I hope they find justice soon. Forever holding space in my heart for Zerrick and his loved ones.
