Has anyone else been thinking about how unimaginable the psychological toll must be on Lakshman Gogada, the third roommate who survived? I can't even fathom what it must be like to witness such a horrific event, all while being in a foreign country barely three weeks after arriving. Courageously facing that nightmare, only to be left behind physically untouched but with emotional scars. It seems so unjust. I know people say time heals, but it’s hard to see how you move past something so tragic, especially when it involves such young perpetrators. It’s deeply troubling to think that 14-year-olds could be involved in such a violent act. My heart really goes out to Lakshman and the families affected. Stories like these make the considerations about public safety so much more personal and immediate. How do we even begin to address the cycle of violence plaguing areas like South Side Chicago?
It's truly upsetting to think about what happened to Devasish Nandepu and his friends that evening. They were just trying to run some errands, probably adjusting to a new life in Chicago, and this happens. It's gut-wrenching to consider how Nandepu's dreams and aspirations were cut short so senselessly. He seemed like someone who had so much potential and was looking forward to a promising career in tech. It must be devastating for his family to have to come to the U.S. under such tragic circumstances to bring him home.
I can't even imagine the trauma Lakshman Gogada is going through. To witness a friend get fatally shot and another seriously injured must be unimaginable. It's no wonder he's thinking of leaving Chicago. Safety concerns in the city are real and need urgent addressing so that people can feel safe walking around doing everyday tasks.
Seeing that the suspects are only 14 years old adds so many layers to this tragedy. It's important that this case sparks more discussions about how to address juvenile involvement in such violent acts. I really hope the authorities take this matter seriously and work towards making significant changes. But most importantly, my thoughts are with the Nandepu family and Lakshman. I hope they find some sort of peace in the wake of all this.
