I just came across China Velma Mitchell's case, and it's truly weighing on me. Besides the overwhelming tragedy of losing her, I'm left thinking about her three kids and the loss they're enduring. She was obviously a dedicated mom, juggling a demanding job as a security guard and raising her children. The thought of them having to navigate life without her breaks me inside. Her parents taking on the responsibility of raising them is admirable, but it must be so tough for them too. I really wish the system had done more to protect China. She had already taken the brave step to seek an Emergency Order of Protection, yet it wasn't enough. Somehow, the same laws that are supposed to protect victims of domestic violence failed her, highlighting a gap that desperately needs addressing to prevent more families from experiencing such pain. Does anyone else feel like this is a glaring reminder that we need better legislation around disarming abusers? My heart truly goes out to her family and those three little ones left behind.
