I've been thinking a lot about the impact this tragedy must have had on the neighborhood, especially for those who were hosting the vigil. I can’t imagine how traumatizing it must be for them to have a moment meant for healing and remembrance turn into a nightmare. All those people were gathered to honor someone they cared about and, instead, were caught up in violence themselves. It’s reassuring to see Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez and other community leaders stepping up to support the residents, but I hope more people come forward with information. There’s such a strong need for the community to heal and feel safe again. No one should have to live in fear, and certainly not when they’re coming together in memory of a loved one. Thinking of Froylan Garcia’s family and friends as well. Losing someone is always difficult, but to have it happen in this way and so suddenly must be incredibly painful. I hope they have the support they need right now and that justice can be served.
