I've been following the Lashon Douglas case, and I can't help but think about the impact this tragedy has on his peers and the kids who knew him. It's devastating to imagine what his classmates must be going through—they've lost a friend, someone they probably shared laughs and life dreams with. It feels like communities in Chicago are constantly living under the shadow of this senseless violence, and it just shouldn't be that way. Being a teenager is supposed to be about exploration and growth, not living in fear or mourning a classmate. I hope that as we continue to discuss these cases, we also focus on supporting the young people who are directly affected by these losses. Ensuring they have resources for counseling and healing is crucial. Just thinking about all the kids who are forced to mature too quickly because of what's happening around them breaks my heart. We owe it to Lashon, his family, and his friends to keep pushing for real change.
