I’ve been thinking a lot about the role public transportation settings play in violent crimes like the tragic incident involving Demarco Mathis. It seems like such a public place, and yet it can become the setting for something so awful. Knowing that Demarco was just trying to get to his destination safely, like so many of us do every day, really strikes me. It makes me wonder about the visibility and effectiveness of security measures at places like the MARTA Arts Center. How can more be done to prevent these situations and ensure that everyone feels secure using public services? My heart goes out to Demarco’s family and friends as they navigate such a painful and senseless loss. It’s comforting to see that the police departments worked swiftly to apprehend the suspect, but I hope this opens up more conversations about prevention and safety in public spaces.
