Hi everyone,
I’ve been thinking a lot about the influence of video games like Fortnite on kids, especially since learning about James Lett Jr.'s tragic passing. I’m not here to blame a game for what happened, but it makes me wonder about the environment our kids are growing up in. James was a seventh grader with his whole life ahead of him, and his family describes him as someone who was always smiling, enjoyed playing football, and was just so full of life. It’s clear he was a good kid who loved having fun with his friends, like so many other kids his age.
A lot of kids today spend time playing video games, and while it can be a great way to connect with friends, I can’t help but worry about how it influences their perception of real-world risks—especially when it comes to something as serious as handling firearms. This isn’t about placing blame, more of a reflection on what can be done to teach children about safety and the seriousness of gun violence. Maybe this is a call for us to make sure we’re having these tough conversations with the young people in our lives?
It’s so important for us as a community to come together and support families like James’s. My heart goes out to his family and friends—no one should ever have to go through such a devastating loss. Let’s honor James by being proactive in keeping our kids safe.
Sending love and strength to all those affected. ❤️
