I'm really disturbed thinking about Lamont Ferguson's murder and how it all unfolded in a squatter-occupied home. I can't help but wonder how this situation could have been prevented in the first place. The fact that Maria Escandell, the actual property owner, had already reported the squatting situation but was told to stay away is just baffling to me. It makes me sad to think about what Lamont must have gone through before the police finally intervened. It's often said that squatter situations can be a ticking time bomb, and this case just sadly proves it. The lack of action or delay in action concerning the squatter problem possibly contributed to an environment where things could escalate to violence. Has anyone looked into what more could be done by the authorities to prevent such a mishap from occurring again? With these unsafe living conditions and now a murder happening under these circumstances, I truly hope this case brings more awareness and perhaps brings about some much-needed change in how squatter issues are handled. Thoughts go to Lamont’s friends and family during this difficult time.
