Has anyone looked into the equipment Claypool was using during that dive? It seems odd that a police detective would disappear under these circumstances without more concrete evidence of a malfunction or issue with his gear. I read that they had state-of-the-art equipment for those kinds of dives back in the late '90s, so could it have been operator error, or is it possible there was something wrong with the equipment itself? Does anyone know if there was an official investigation into the gear, or did they just base their conclusions on witness statements? And what about the manufacturer—were there any recalls or similar incidents reported around that time? This case has always intrigued me, and diving accidents usually leave behind some trace or explanation.
Has anyone looked into the specific safety protocols that were in place on that diving expedition where John Claypool went missing? I've been reading up on similar deep-sea dives and it seems like proper buoyancy control is critical, especially at those depths. I'm curious if they had an appropriate dive master aboard or if there were any prior issues with equipment on that boat. It just seems odd to me that two experienced divers like Claypool and Elkins would both encounter fatal issues on the same dive without some underlying factor. Anyone familiar with diving safety care to chime in on what might have gone wrong?
