On the evening of June 12, 1976, Georgetown University professor Dr. Gawaina J. Luster was found in the 1800 block of Vernon Street NW in Washington, D.C., the victim of a homicide by strangulation. The discovery was reported at about 6:30 p.m., and the case was assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch under reference HO-76-1006 (CCN 76-270-934).
Officials and later public notices have repeatedly sought information about who attacked the professor in that residential corridor north of Dupont Circle. The investigation remains open; no arrest has been publicly recorded and no suspect has been named, so the killing is still listed among the city’s unresolved homicides.
Did anyone in the neighborhood that evening or who knew Dr. Luster notice anything unusual around Vernon Street that could help the investigation?
