Hey everyone, I’ve been following the recent tragedy in the Lower Santan Village, and I can't stop thinking about what a bright soul Alicen Apkaw seemed to be from everything I've read. It's so utterly devastating to know someone so full of life was taken so abruptly. The stories from her colleagues at the Gila River Resorts & Casinos are so touching. It speaks volumes about her character that her coworkers describe her as joyous and supportive, and it's clear that she made an impact on everyone she met. It's unimaginable what her family and friends must be going through right now, not to mention the entire community that’s grieving her loss alongside Officer Briese. One thing that stands out to me from this whole situation is the resilience of the Gila River Indian Community. Despite this horrific event, they seem to be coming together with so much strength and focus on healing. Governor Lewis’s words about unity and positivity are hopeful. In times like these, that collective support is crucial. If anyone has any ideas on how we can further support Alicen’s family or if there are any donation funds set up, please share. It’s moments like these when I wish there was more we could do beyond just offering words. Sending thoughts of peace and healing to everyone affected.
