Living in D.C. my whole life, I've never been able to forget what happened at Franklin Commons back in 2002. I just keep coming back to the fact that Elvon Miller was such a positive influence on the youth in the neighborhood, particularly through sports. It's so tragic that someone who clearly had an impact on his community—despite his past—was taken away in such a brutal manner. I think about the kids he mentored who might have been looking up to him, seeing him as a symbol of hope or someone who was trying to turn his life around. The fact that he still gets mentioned in the context of these youth activities shows me how much he mattered to people. Sure, he had some run-ins with the law, but who hasn’t in some way or another? It’s the moments of redemption that we should focus on. The news about his involvement with cocaine shouldn't overshadow the good he tried to do. I hope that the police can get a breakthrough in this case. Meanwhile, it does serve as a somber reminder for us in the community to support each other and keep watch over our neighbors. Let's remember these three not just for how their lives ended, but for their moments of triumph too. If anyone feels they know something, contact the authorities. It's never too late to do the right thing.
