I’ve been following the case of Derrick Thompson and Alivia Welch, and I keep circling back to the role of the Biddeford Police Department. It's deeply distressing to think about how close Derrick was to potentially getting the help he and Alivia needed. They reached out, took the scary step of involving law enforcement, and yet nothing was done. It's hard not to wonder if things could have been different had the situation been taken more seriously. Feels like this might be one of those "what if" situations that will stay with the families forever. I can’t even begin to comprehend the pain Susan Johnson must carry, losing her son and his girlfriend in such a violent way. Whatever one's stance on the legal outcome, I hope the community has learned from this tragedy and that steps are being taken to prevent something like this from happening again.
