Sheriff James E. Summers, a 38-year-old White/Caucasian man who led Madison County law enforcement, was killed on January 25, 1901, while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in Morgan Gulch near Virginia City, Montana. He had been pursuing a lead in a burglary at a local rancher’s cabin when the 18-year-old suspect resisted and fatally shot him. Summerset’s death left a wife and five children bereaved and deeply affected the small frontier community.
The suspect was captured the following day, later convicted of second-degree murder and originally sentenced on May 26, 1901 to life in prison. Records show that in 1913 the sentence was reduced to 20 to 25 years. Sheriff Summers was buried in the Virginia City Cemetery, remembered for his service and the sacrifice he made in the line of duty.
If anyone has family memories, letters, or photographs related to Sheriff Summers or the events in Morgan Gulch, please share what is known.
