On January 4, 1902, Bureau of Indian Affairs officer Dick Bullard was fatally shot near Lame Deer on the Northern Cheyenne (Tongue River) Agency while taking part in an attempt to arrest a man accused of illegally slaughtering cattle and stealing meat on the reservation. Officers first tried to have the suspect come to the agency; after an officer approached the man alone and was threatened, a larger detail returned to effect the arrest. At the tepee, the man raised a rifle and opened fire while his wife stepped outside holding a knife; Bullard was struck by a rifle shot and mortally wounded. The remaining officers withdrew amid the gunfire, ending that arrest attempt.
Does anyone have further details about the individuals involved or documents from the agency’s investigation?
