Officer Dick Bullard, a Bureau of Indian Affairs police officer, was shot and killed on January 4, 1902, while attempting to apprehend a suspect on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation near Lame Deer, Montana. The suspect was wanted for illegally killing cattle and stealing meat.
