Charles R. Hill was a local rancher near Snow Creek who was killed while taking part in a posse pursuing prisoners who had escaped from the Valley County Jail. After four men broke out, including Hardee, Albert Jackson, and Jack Brown, residents formed a search party. During a brush search the situation escalated when a single shot struck Hill in the eye, killing him instantly. The fugitives, well covered, kept the posse pinned down with gunfire.

News of Hill’s death provoked an angry response in Glasgow that evening. A mob gathered at the jail and, with little resistance from jailers, seized Jack Brown, dragged him to the Court House, and hanged him from a second-floor window; his body remained hanging through the night. If anyone knew Charles Hill or witnessed the posse’s pursuit or the events at the jail that night, please share what was seen or heard.
