On March 17, 1990, Fairview, Montana lost its longtime Chief of Police, 60-year-old Orville Edwin Sharbono. He was serving civil papers that afternoon and had told friends at lunch he felt uneasy about the job he was about to do. While attempting to serve the warrant he was ambushed by a man identified as James Allen, who approached from a side door and shot the chief in the lower back.
Sharbono returned fire and wounded Allen, but as the chief lay wounded Allen walked over and shot him fatally in the head. The community remembered Sharbono as a man of integrity who was survived by his wife and three grown children. Allen was later arrested and received a life sentence; he died in prison on May 6, 2020.
Did anyone in Fairview at the time see or hear details about the service call that afternoon or the events at the side door?
