Joe Powers was 37 when he was fatally shot on November 3, 2015, on Fish Creek Road near Whitehall, Montana. The group went to the Fish Creek area to shoot clay pigeons; methamphetamine use and handling of firearms were reported the night before.
The vehicle became stuck in the snow and, after it was freed, Sawyer allegedly disappeared into the woods and then reappeared and opened fire without warning. Powers was killed at the scene; Smith was shot in the chin and Drury was shot in the shoulder, both surviving. Sawyer fled but was arrested in Idaho Falls on November 4, 2015, and charged with one count of deliberate homicide and two counts of attempted deliberate homicide. Prosecutors showed post-arrest video interviews in which Sawyer discussed his criminal history; his defense argued justifiable force and extreme mental or emotional distress. A Silver Bow County jury convicted Sawyer on all counts and an appeal challenging counsel was denied.
Are there details about the group’s movements that anyone nearby that day can clarify?
