On March 6, 2016, 5-year-old Kenneth Kenny Kreuscher of Roundup, Montana, was found with a fatal gunshot wound. His mother, Sara Atkinson, was also found with a gunshot wound to the head; both were taken to the hospital and did not survive. Investigators determined Atkinson shot her son and then herself in a murder-suicide.

Kenneth’s father, Ken Kreuscher, had lived in Denver, Colorado, and for years reported concerns about Atkinson’s mental health and behavior. He told authorities and filed court paperwork describing paranoia and alleged abuse toward his son, sought a restraining order, and repeatedly warned that his son was not safe in his mother’s care. He later described Kenneth as a lively child, a firecracker who was full of life.
