Travis Jay Gillett was 31 when his body was found in the Yaak River Valley, Lincoln County, Montana, on January 16, 2017, a few days after he was reported missing from Bonner County, Idaho. An investigation determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities say Gillett left Sandpoint, Idaho, on January 13 intending to make a delivery in the Yaak area but never arrived. Prosecutors later alleged he was abducted from a homeless shelter in Ponderay by his former girlfriend, Sarah Carpenter, and her husband, Ezra Skinner. Skinner testified that Carpenter picked Gillett up, bound and sedated him, drove him into Montana, and that Carpenter forced him from the car and shot him along Yaak River Road. Carpenter led investigators to the body and gave a false story about finding Gillett’s belongings.
At trial Carpenter accused Skinner of committing the killing; her defense argued Skinner was motivated by a belief Gillett had caused Carpenter to have a miscarriage. A jury convicted Sarah Carpenter of deliberate homicide. Ezra Skinner pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and testified for the prosecution. Did anyone in the Yaak or Sandpoint communities see Gillett between January 13 and January 16, 2017?
