On the night of August 4, 2017, gunfire in a home in Lodge Grass on the Crow Reservation in southeastern Montana left three people dead, including 30-year-old Nehemiah Rocko Broken Rope. Two others killed were Leslie Frank Nomee Jr., 27, and Denise Elizabeth Faith Stewart-Nomee, 25; two additional people were injured.

Investigators issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for Roderick Plentyhawk, 32, and federal agents raided a Lodge Grass home the following day, but no arrests were made then. The Crow Tribal Chairman imposed a mandatory curfew after the shootings. A 10-month investigation by the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs concluded the scene was chaotic: Broken Rope, Nomee Jr., and Stewart reportedly forcibly entered the residence armed, an occupant inside the house also was armed, and an exchange of gunfire occurred. One occupant was shot in the abdomen; the three entrants sustained fatal injuries.

In June 2018 the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced it could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt who fired the fatal shots and declined to bring criminal charges, and the case was closed. Does anyone who lived in Lodge Grass at the time have information about that night or the people involved?
