On August 4, 2017, 25-year-old Denise Stewart-Nomee, a Native American woman from the Crow Tribe, was shot and killed in Lodge Grass, Montana, along with her husband Leslie Frank Nomee Jr., 27, and a man identified as 30-year-old Nehemiah Brokenrope. The three died after what investigators described as a violent, armed confrontation at a residence on the Crow Indian Reservation that also injured two other people.

Investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs reported that Stewart-Nomee and the two men with her had forcibly entered the home and were armed; at least one occupant inside the house was also armed. An exchange of gunfire followed. The house burned to the ground days later, complicating the inquiry. A Be On the Lookout alert named a person of interest, Roderick Plentyhawk, 32, who was questioned but never charged in the Lodge Grass deaths; he was later arrested in an unrelated Billings shooting.

After a 10-month federal probe, the U.S. Attorney for Montana announced no federal charges would be filed, citing an inability to prove beyond a reasonable doubt who fired the fatal shots and obstacles from claims of self-defense or defense of another. Crow Tribal leaders linked the violence to methamphetamine and gang activity in the area. If anyone knew Denise, the other victims, or saw activity around that Lodge Grass residence in early August 2017, please come forward with information.
