On August 1, 2019, 11-year-old Caden Daniel Lacunza, a White boy from Toston, Montana, was killed while on a family camping trip near Radersburg, west of Townsend. The father later told authorities he had been reckless with a .357 revolver, thought the family was gathered at the campfire, and was not aiming at anything in particular; dense tree branches blocked his view of Caden. Emergency help was not immediately available and Caden died of his injuries that day.
The Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office investigated, and Cadet Lacunza was charged with negligent homicide. At his initial court appearance he was represented by a defense attorney and released on his own recognizance with conditions including a mental health evaluation and surrendering his firearms.
If anyone was at the campsite or remembers that day and can add details, please share relevant information with the discussion.
