John Patrick Hiilani Figueira (also recorded as John Patrick Hiilani Figueira Araujo and John Araujo), a 53-year-old Hispanic man, was found dead in a southwest Kalispell residence on October 19, 2019. Police responded that evening to a vague welfare-check call; shortly after, a man voluntarily came to the Kalispell Police Department and confessed to shooting someone at that address. Officers who entered the home located Araujo’s body. The man who confessed was taken into custody for questioning and later released, and as of late October 2019 no charges had been filed in the homicide.
Araujo had been arrested the month before on federal drug charges alongside two individuals from California, accused of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute after authorities seized more than 30 pounds of methamphetamine. The Kalispell Police Chief described the homicide probe as complex while investigators processed evidence and witness statements. No public announcement of arrests or identified suspects in the killing has been made.
Did anyone in Kalispell or the surrounding area have contact with Araujo in October 2019 or information about the welfare-check that evening?
