On the evening of August 27, 2022, in Martin City, Montana, 28-year-old Whisper Dawn Mari Sellars, a Native American woman, was shot and killed outside the South Fork Saloon after an argument over a golf cart escalated. Witnesses say Sellars and another woman were taking pictures in a golf cart driven there by 40-year-old Del Orrin Crawford. A confrontation involving Crawford, Sellars, and her husband, Doug Crosswhite, turned physical; after Crosswhite allegedly pushed Crawford to the ground, Crawford reportedly produced a handgun and began shooting.

Sellars was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene despite attempts at CPR. Crosswhite sustained gunshot wounds to an arm and the chest but survived. The couple had five children together. Crawford was contacted by police by phone, instructed to put his weapon down and return to the bar, and was arrested there. He told officers the firearm was in a safe place and initially claimed self-defense. He was charged with deliberate homicide, attempted deliberate homicide, and evidence tampering, pleaded not guilty, and was held on $750,000 bail before posting it and being released with conditions including GPS monitoring.
