I came across some old articles about the events in Troy and what struck me was the immense impact John Hays' death had on the community. It sounds like he was truly dedicated to keeping the town safe, and it’s just awful that his life ended in such a violent way. I can’t imagine the fear and grief his family must have endured, not to mention the shock the town experienced losing their marshal this way. I wonder if there were discussions back then about how law enforcement could be better protected during arrests. The situation with Paine Sly seems like it might have been avoidable if there had been more support or better resources available. Does anyone know if any changes were made in Troy or in similar towns after incidents like this one? It’s just so sad to think of Hays' dedication and how it ended in such a tragic manner. My thoughts are with his descendants and anyone whose life was touched by his service.
