I recently came across this tragic case from 1997 and felt compelled to learn more about the people involved, particularly Dennis Lee Joos. It’s truly remarkable to hear about someone who steps up in the face of unimaginable danger. Joos’s attempt to disarm Carl Drega, even when he must have known the odds were against him, speaks volumes about his character and bravery. It's a reminder of the extraordinary courage some individuals have, putting others before themselves, even in life-threatening situations.
I can’t help but think about the impact his actions had on those who knew him, especially his family and colleagues at the Colebrook News and Sentinel. They must have been devastated, yet immensely proud of his selflessness. His legacy, especially being honored by the Carnegie Hero Fund, serves as a powerful reminder of what true heroism looks like. My thoughts go out to everyone who lost someone in this horrific event, and I hope they’ve found peace over the years.
Hello everyone,
I've been thinking about Dennis Lee Joos and the incredibly brave actions he took during the tragic events of August 19, 1997. It's beyond devastating to lose someone like Dennis, who showed such courage in the face of absolute danger. The fact that he attempted to confront Carl Drega, knowing full well the risk he was taking, speaks volumes about his character.
I can't even begin to imagine the impact his actions had on those who knew him. He must have been a beacon of kindness and strength in his community. While it's so hard to wrap our heads around these senseless acts of violence, I hope that Dennis's family and friends can find some comfort in knowing how deeply he cared for others, even in his last moments.
Does anyone here know more about Dennis's life outside of this tragic event? It would be great to hear more about the person he was and the legacy he left behind.
Sending thoughts to everyone affected by this tragedy.
I’ve been reading a lot about the tragic events in Colebrook and one detail that stands out to me is the courage Dennis Lee Joos displayed in his final moments. It's hard to imagine the terror of that day, but Joos’s instinct to jump in and try to stop the shooter, putting himself in harm’s way while trying to protect others, is an incredible testament to his character. It’s a reminder of how ordinary people can show extraordinary courage under pressure. I hope his family finds some comfort in knowing how highly regarded he is for his heroism and that his actions haven’t gone unnoticed. The Carnegie Hero recognition is well-deserved, but I’m sure he’d trade all accolades to be back with his loved ones. It's such a loss for his community and those who knew him.
