It’s utterly devastating what happened to Derreck Almanzar. Just thinking about how quickly a situation can turn deadly when domestic violence is involved is chilling. There’s been a lot of discussion around the actual shooting, but I keep thinking about how Derreck and his friends were just trying to help. It's a reminder of the risks people take when they step in to protect others from harm, especially in cases of domestic violence. I can’t even imagine what Derreck’s family and friends are going through, knowing he was just trying to offer support in a horrible situation and ended up losing his life for it. No one should have to fear for their safety when attempting to help someone in need. My heart goes out to them, and I hope they find some piece of justice and peace in the days to follow.
