I can’t stop thinking about Officer James Ryan McCandless and what his family must be going through. It’s hard to imagine the pain his fiancée, parents, and sister are enduring. Officer McCandless seemed like such a dedicated and respected member of the Rapid City Police Department, and it’s clear he was deeply valued by his colleagues. Being recognized as Rookie of the Year and then awarded the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart posthumously speaks volumes about his character and bravery. I hope his family finds comfort in knowing the impact he left on the community and his fellow officers. It’s a tragic reminder of the risks law enforcement faces daily, and my thoughts go out to all those affected by this terrible event.
