I still can't wrap my head around what happened in Sisseton back in 2014. The loss of Vernon Renville Jr. is just unfathomable to so many who knew him. I recently came across some information about his efforts with the Two-Spirited Society, and it truly speaks volumes about the kind of person he was. Advocating for a community that often feels marginalized is no easy task, yet Vernon dedicated himself to creating a space for it, which is so commendable. I hope the legacy of his work lives on and inspires others in the community to continue what he started. My thoughts are with his family and friends as they navigate this unimaginable loss. ?
Has anyone here looked into the significance of the Dakota name "Wambdi Mani O Yaka" that Vernon Renville Jr. had? It seems like this name might have had a deep meaning for him and perhaps even influenced his personality and actions in life. From what I know, names in Indigenous cultures are often chosen for their symbolic meanings and are a huge part of someone's identity. It breaks my heart to hear about this loss not just of a person, but of a whole set of values and cultural history that he carried with him.
The tragedy is tough to process, especially knowing how negatively domestic violence impacts communities. It's disheartening to think Vernon's work with the Two-Spirited Society could have been cut short by something so senseless. It's important we remember and continue discussing these events to fully honor their lives. ?️
I've been following the tragic events in Sisseton, and my heart goes out to Vernon Renville Jr.'s family and all those affected. Reading about how he was so dedicated to his friends and advocacy efforts is truly inspiring. His work with the Two-Spirited Society shows what a forward-thinking and compassionate individual he was. It's hard to wrap my head around how someone so committed to supporting others could be taken in such a senseless act of violence. I hope that his legacy of community involvement and love for his "Beasties" continues to inspire and comfort those left behind. Does anyone know if any events or memorials have been held in his honor? Thinking of all the families impacted during this difficult time.
