I've been thinking a lot about Deputy Sheriff C.E. Pierce and the sacrifice he made during the mob attack at the Big Horn County jail. It's hard to fathom the courage he and Marshal George Mead showed in the face of such chaos and lawlessness. Losing his life while simply trying to uphold the law speaks volumes about the risks that law enforcement officers took back then—and continue to take today. I can't even imagine what his family must have felt, losing him so suddenly and violently. Was there ever any support for them from the community or the state? It's upsetting to know that Deputy Pierce's death seemed to have faded out of the spotlight amidst the larger story of the lynching. It's vital that we remember all victims of such events, including those who were simply trying to do their duty. I wonder if there are any descendants or local historians in Basin who could shed more light on Deputy Pierce's life and legacy. It's time we acknowledge the full scope of losses from that tragic night in 1903.
